Scaling music metadata distribution using Hadoop

New music metadata is added daily to Spotify's catalog, both from external providers and from internal sources of data. All the metadata for tracks, albums and artists needs to be processed and efficiently served to our users. As the amount of content increases, we need to adapt our backend to accommodate for the growth.
This talk will be focused on Spotify's backend for handling music metadata and on how we scaled one of the metadata datasets using Hadoop. Checkout the video and slides!

Pedro is a backend engineer that has been working with Spotify's music metadata systems for the past 3 years. He has also worked at OutSystems and Portugal Telecom, after graduating from FEUP in 2010. Originally from the Porto area, you can now find him living in Stockholm. When not building software, Pedro will most likely be in the nearest swimming pool, enjoying some craft beer or travelling around the world.

Going functional with javascript

The majority of developers hear about functional JavaScript and how it can help their code, but have no idea how to get started. Functional is great, but there are some core concepts hard to visualize such as functional sequences, transformers and transducers.
This talk aims at introducing functional programming in JavaScript with real life examples whose logic is "simple" to visualise. We will use functions as logic steps and apply them to 'filters', 'map' and 'reduce'. You will discover how to use Functional programming to make your code easier to read and test. The goal of feed ranking is to prioritize the most interesting among multiple available stories and display them on top of the feed, where the user is most likely to see them. We strive to provide the most compelling content to each person and make sure they don't miss the news they really care about. I will describe the backend systems that power feed ranking and the large-scale machine learning models we are building to make the news feed a personalized experience.

Olga Maksin works as a software engineer at Facebook London since September 2014. She relocated from Israel, where she worked at Nova Measuring Instruments, RSA/EMC, Allscripts and the Military Intelligence. She holds a master's degree in Computer Science from the Ben Gurion University.

After building the first versions of their apps on a typical ‘release when ready’ schedule, GetYourGuide turned to a short release cycle to move forward. Fábio, one of their software engineers in their apps team, will explain why it made sense for a relatively small team in the travel space to adopt a strategy usually associated with big teams. Fábio Oliveira is a FEUP alumnus who has been developing apps on the iOS platform since 2010. His passion for building software that people love to use led him to work increasingly closer to where product decisions are taken. Working at GetYourGuide in Berlin for 20 months now, he has been able to offer his skills to build a mobile product people can use to fully experience their travels, through fast iterations and a/b tests.
